One of the most eagerly anticipated music films of recent years, “Straight Outta Compton” has been a major hit in its opening few days in the US, taking over $50m in its opening weekend, but there is one place you can’t see it – Compton.

The film tells the story of the rise of pioneering rap group N.W.A. who made their hometown city (and its ills) famous, but it won’t be shown in Compton as the city in Los Angeles county has no cinemas.

"It's a low income area, it's been heavily dis-invested in," USC professor of sociology Manuel Pastor told CBS.

"When you live in a community that doesn't have that kind of retail, it's a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued."

There are currently plans to build an entertainment district in the city, including a 16-screen cinema.

Dr. Dre, co-producer of the film, has promised to donate royalties from his new album ‘Compton’ to the city to fund a new arts and entertainment centre for children.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ is in cinemas across Ireland on August 28.
