The Minister for Sport, Shane Ross, says he would like to see Ireland's last 16 match against France on Sunday broadcast live on a big screen in Dublin city centre.

Minister Ross says it would be a great if one of the Dublin local authorities opened a fanzone where people could watch the knockout tie.

“It would be a great gesture if one of the local authorities, in Dublin in particular, said we're going to open Merrion Square, or one of these places, so people can watch it in a safe atmosphere," the Dublin TD said.

It follows calls for appropriate facilities to be provided to allow families enjoy the game in a safe, alcohol free and atmospheric way.

Speaking in the Dáil the Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald, said she is working on setting up screens in Dublin similar to those that were erected for the marriage referendum results in May of last year.

Rebecca Moynihan, Labour Councillor for Dublin's South West Inner City, told Newstalk Lunchtime that they are looking into it and are “very hopeful” a fanzone could be set up for the historic clash.
