Indiana Jones, the archaeologist who essentially taught the world what archaeologists never actually end up doing, will return to the big screen on July 19th, 2019 for a fifth movie in the blockbuster franchise.

Steven Spielberg, who previously directed all four instalments, will return to the helm in the as-yet-untitled film, with Harrison Ford dusting off his leather whip for the iconic role. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, who produced the other films in the series, will also return.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Dr Jones debuted in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, a Christmas holiday staple of British and Irish television screens, and went on to appear in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In 2008, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull divided audiences and critics alike, though the four movies have brought in a whopping $2bn at the global box office.
