Some universities are reportedly leaving places empty on courses for fear the number of CAO points required for entry would be reduced otherwise.

The Sunday Business Post reports that a working group has found that colleges will keep some seats vacant on a high points courses - instead of lowering requirements to fill capacity.

It is understood those engaging in the practice are afraid students' choices are being made based on the high points profile of the programmes, and that lower requirements would reduce the prestige of the courses and negatively impact student numbers.

A majority of students who received their Leaving Cert results last Wednesday will be receiving offers from the CAO tomorrow morning.

With many students set to start looking for accommodation following acceptance of their offers, Fianna Fáil Education Spokesperson Charlie McConalogue has criticised the delay in publishing a Higher Education Authority report on student accommodation.

Deputy McConalogue said, "the challenge facing students this year is more acute than ever because of the escalating housing and homelessness crisis. This situation has not been helped by the Education Minister continuing to delay on a report which will put forward recommendations on how best to tackle the problem".
