The soldier shot outside the Canadian parliament in Ottawa has died. Another individual, a suspect, was also killed earlier today. The police operation is ongoing in the Canadian capital and there are currently no suspects in custody.

The Ottawa Police Service would neither confirm or deny if there was more than one suspect, but explicitly asked the Canadian public to remain vigilant.

Police have confirmed a suspect was shot and killed inside the parliament buildings.

The operation is ongoing and police have instructed residents of the city to stay away from the downtown area while the investigation continues.

There were lock-downs in place in several locations around the city - including a hotel and shopping centre. Some of these lock-downs have now been lifted.

The Globe and Mail released footage of shooting, apparently between police officers and a suspect, inside the parliament building.

The Ottawa Police Service has released a statement, saying:

“This morning’s shooting incidents occurred at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill.

“Contrary to earlier reports no incident occurred near the Rideau Centre.

“One shooting victim succumbed to injuries. He was a member of the Canadian Forces.

“One male suspect has also been confirmed deceased. There is no further update on injuries at this time.

“This is an ongoing joint police operation and there is no one in custody at this time.

“Ottawa residents are asked to stay away from the downtown area while the investigation continues. If you work in one of the downtown buildings, follow the instructions from the building management you are in.”

The soldier was guarding the War Memorial near the parliament building when a gunman opened fire.

Peter Henderson, from Ottawa news service The Wire Report, spoke to Sky News before it was confirmed that the soldier had died. He said:

"It was deserted because people had ran away.

"I ran up, looked around to make sure there was no one with a gun coming at me; ran into the middle and saw a young man, clearly a soldier.

"He had been shot multiple times and there was other members of the Canadian forces and bystanders who had rushed to his aid and had begun CPR.

"He was not moving. [The injuries] were as severe as they could possibly have been."

Mr Henderson said he had spoken with one witness who saw the gunman carefully take aim.

"He said the man came around the corner, walked up, put a rifle on his shoulder, took aim and clearly made a targeted shooting of one of the two members of the honour guard," Henderson said.

CBC are reporting that there were concerns raised earlier this week about a security threat against Ottawa. There is no news yet on the specific nature of those concerns.
