A former British solider accused of killing Daniel Hegarty over 50 years ago in Derry, known only as Soldier B, has died. 

Daniel Hegarty was 15 at the time he was shot twice in the head during 'Operation Motorman' in the Creggan area on July 31st, 2023. 

In 2021, the Northern Ireland Public Prosecution Service (PPS) announced it would not be prosecuting Soldier B. 

The decision to not prosecute the soldier was challenged by the family of Daniel and the Court of Appeal overturned the PPS’ decision in June this year. 

Daniel’s family have said they take "no delight" in the death of the soldier and criticised the PPS for "dragging out the case".
