A skull discovered by workmen in a field in north Co Dublin yesterday afternoon has been identified as human remains.

The state pathologist carried out a preliminary examination earlier today and determined the skull is that of a male.

The skull has been removed to the city morgue - forensic anthropologists and detectives are now checking missing persons files in the hope of identifying the deceased.

The scene in Swords remains sealed off as a forensic examination continues.
