Sinn Féin has announced it will participate in events around the visit of Prince Charles to Ireland.
The Prince of Wales and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall are to make an historic visit to Mullaghmore this week where his Great Uncle Lord Mountbatten was killed in an IRA bombing.
Sinn Féin says the visit is an opportunity to promote reconciliation between Ireland and Great Britain.
In a statement, Gerry Adams said, “there remains unresolved injustices. These must be rectified and a healing process developed.
“There is a responsibility on us all to promote reconciliation and seek to promote healing. It is with that in mind that the Ard Chomhairle decided that Sinn Féin representatives will attend a number of events during this visit,” he added.
The party's Padraig Mac Lochlainn says their participation in the occasion is a significant move forward:
Prince Charlies and Camilla The Duchess of Cornwall will attend events in both the Republic and the North, from May 19th to 22nd.
It comes 20 years after the heir to the British throne first came to the Republic in May 1995.
This will mark the couple's first official joint visit to Ireland.
