The Taoiseach's accused Fianna Fáil of hypocrisy over its stance on severance payments to Alan Shatter.

Enda Kenny says Micheál Martin is misleading the public by saying former Fianna Fáil ministers would not accept severance pay.

The Taoiseach has again said he hopes Alan Shatter will "do the right thing" and turn down the €70,000 in severance pay he is entitled to.

The former Justice Minister is due to make a statement on the Plinth at Leinster House at 2.30 this afternoon.

But Enda Kenny told reporters that current Fianna Fáil TDs got similar payments in 2011:

Former Justice Minister Shatter will be making a statement this afternoon on the lump sum.

The government has banned the payments going forward, but the legislation was not formally in place by the time of Deputy Shatter's resignation last month.

Elsewhere this morning, Enda Kenny told reporters that he spoke with Alan Shatter yesterday, though they didn't speak about the issue:

And Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said he expects Alan Shatter will announce he will turn the money down:

The Irish Examiner's Special Correspondent - Michael Clifford - says Alan Shatter's decision to make a statement in person could be significant:

Yesterday Ministers lined up to say they hoped Alan Shatter would decline the perk.
