At least 14 people are reported to have died after a six-storey building collapsed in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, following days of heavy rain and flooding.
TV station KTN said that while 58 people including a baby had been rescued, "most residents" were still inside, trapped in the rubble.
A large crowd surrounded the building as police and rescue workers removed chunks of masonry.
The workers’ arrival had been delayed because of traffic jams caused by flooded roads. Kenya is in the middle of its rainy season.
On its Twitter feed, the Kenya Red Cross said one adult and three children had been taken to the city’s Kenyatta National Hospital.
It added that people from around 150 households were taking shelter in a nearby village, amid “chaotic scenes”.
A tracing and counselling service was set up nearby.
It is feared some builders in Nairobi are bypassing regulations amid high demand for housing. Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit of all the buildings in the country.
Kenya’s National Construction Authority subsequently found that 58% of buildings in the capital were unfit to live in.
