Gardai investigating the disappearance of two men have begun searching a fresh site in an area on the Cavan-Meath border.

Nobody has seen or heard from Eoin O'Connor (32) and Anthony Keegan (33), who are both from Coolock in north Dublin, since last week.

It has been exactly one week since they travelled to Cavan. The two friends have been missing ever since.

The silver grey Ford Focus car they travelled in was found at Lough Owel near Mullingar last Friday, and an extensive search of the area proved fruitless.

Investigating officers are becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of the men.

They say they are looking into a number of possible explanations for their disappearance - including the involvement of a well-known criminal gang.

Today the search team moved to an area near Mountnugent in Co. Cavan. The search is expected to continue there for the rest of the day.

In the meantime, anytime with information is asked to contact gardai.
