A Status Yellow snow and ice warning is set to remain in place for six counties until midnight tonight.
Met Éireann said wintry showers will see localised accumulations of hail and snow in Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.
The accumulations will compact to ice in some areas leading to hazardous driving conditions.
Meanwhile, a Status Yellow wind warning will remain in place in Donegal until 5pm.
The forecaster said winds will average 50 to 60kph with gusts reaching as high as 110kph.
TODAY
Cold and blustery around the country today with sunny spells and scattered showers.
Some of the showers will have a wintry mix of hail or sleet and possibly some snow, especially on high ground.
The showers will become more prolonged in southwestern areas later this afternoon, with a risk of thunder.
Highs of 4C to 7C.
Moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds will be strong near coasts, with gales in the west and northwest.
TONIGHT
Cold with a mix of clear spells and showers of rain, hail and sleet and an ongoing risk of thunder.
Snow is also possible, especially over high ground in the west.
Minimum temperatures of -3C to 1C with frost and icy patches forming.
Light to moderate southwest winds will be fresh to strong and gusty on eastern and southern coasts at first.
