A retired member of An Garda Síochána has been arrested as part of an investigation into immigration irregularities.

Gardaí from the Roscommon/Longford division have been investigating the irregularities at a Garda station in the then-Western Region since mid-2017.

The arrested man aged in his 60s was a serving member of the force, but has since retired.

He was detained on Wednesday in connection with the investigation.

He is being detained at a Garda station in the midlands area under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí involved in this investigation were assisted by a team from the Garda National Immigration Bureau, and officials from the Department of Justice.

The force says investigations are ongoing.
