Two missiles fell off a Tornado fighter jet as it was landing at an RAF base in Cyprus, an official has confirmed.

The Brimstone ground attack weapons did not explode and no one was injured in the incident at RAF Akrotiri, a spokesman said.

The base has been used in airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq.

But the spokesman would not be drawn on whether the aircraft was returning from a combat mission against the terror group, also known as ISIS and ISIL.

He said: "I can confirm that during a Tornado landing at Akrotiri two of its missiles became detached from the aircraft."

Akrotiri is one of two British military bases on the island.

Alongside strikes by fighter aircraft, armed drones have also been used to target IS insurgents in Iraq.

Earlier this week, the British Prime Minister David Cameron ordered increased spending on the unmanned military aircraft and SAS in the battle against IS.

Stressing the need to destroy the terrorists, he said: "We've done a huge amount already, and I want to thank the brave RAF crews who've flown so many missions over Iraq - more than any other country apart from the United States."

"But I'm quite clear that when it comes to the threats the country faces, this threat of extremist Islamist terrorism, a threat on our own streets and on our own people, as we saw tragically on that beach in Tunisia - this is the threat of our generation, the battle of our generation and fight that we're going to have."

"And I'm absolutely determined that the RAF, Army and Navy will have the equipment, the means and the resources to deal with it."
