A small riot broke out in New York's Rikers Island prison after prisoners refused to abide by a newly instituted 9pm curfew - all because they would miss their favourite TV shows.

Inmates at the high-security facility had grown accustomed to watching 'En Otra Piel' (In Another Skin), a Spanish-language drama about a male prostitute that one prison official described as "soft porn." Other favourites include 'Under the Dome' and 'Mistresses.'

But a new Monday night curfew meant that they would be sent to their cells before these shows aired.

The New York Post reports that 68 inmates refused to leave the common area, and that wardens used pepper spray to resolve the situation.

The new curfew was introduced as Monday nights have seen an increasing amount of violence in the overcrowded prison.

A source in the correctional facility told the Post:

"Some of them have been there a long time and the new rule is confusing to them... They don’t have enough to do anyway and now brass is taking away nightly TV privileges."
