Former residents of Priory Hall are considering a plan drawn-up by the government to deal with the evacuated complex. It comes just a week before the Supreme Court is due to hear an appeal from Dublin City Council over their accommodation costs.

It has been two years since the Donaghmede complex was evacuated amid fire safety concerns but some sort of solution could now be on the horizon.

Three weeks ago the Environment Minister Phil Hogan invited all relevant parties to talks, saying it was time for a solution to be thrashed out. A proposal was agreed upon yesterday and has now been passed onto the former residents for consideration.

Many of the homeowners stopped paying their mortgages and following the recent intervention by government they said they were hopeful of a clean slate

Some sort of mortgage deal is expected, but it is not yet clear how buy-to-let loans will be handled. Residents have been living in temporary accommodation since their evacuation.

Last month, Newstalk learned that the government is recommending that apartment owners should have the remainder of their mortgages wiped out and be allowed to hand back the keys to the banks.

Our political editor Shane Coleman said it is understood the government are already in favour of allowing residents to walk away from their properties.

So far Dublin City Council has been footing the bill but the Supreme Court is due to hear an appeal from them early next week.

In the meantime residents say they will be going through this proposed deal in detail before deciding whether or not to accept it.
