Preliminary investigations into the cause of a bus crash in Tarragona that claimed the lives of 13 people suggest that the driver may have fallen asleep.
The accident, which took place on Sunday morning at around 6am (local time), occurred on the AP7 highway, which runs along Spain's eastern coast.
Two Irish people were injured in the crash, which claimed the lives of 13 people, all of whom are believed to be female according to the Spanish Minister of the Interior Jorge Fernández Díaz.
Both Díaz and Interior Minister for Catalunya, Jordi Jané, have attributed the accident to human error rather than a technical failing.
According to reports in El País, tests revealed no signs of alcohol or drugs in the driver's system and preliminary investigations point towards the possibility that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
It was also noted that, according to what sources told Spanish news agency Efe, the driver had 17 years of experience and had never had an accident before.
