Poppy, a tortoiseshell that was recognised by the Guiness Book of World Records as the longest living cat, has died. She clinched the title on May 19, but passed away after a water infection and issues with her hind legs.

The Daily Mail spoke to Poppy's owner Jacqui West about her loss:

"We knew she was old but it’s still very upsetting.

"She had a bad week last week. She was on antibiotics on the Wednesday because of a water infection and her back legs just seemed to let her down. She wasn’t herself at all."

Even her feline friends are in mourning:

"All of us are off food, the other cats didn’t eat all day on Friday and they all seem to be loitering around waiting for Poppy to come home."

Poppy became the oldest cat after the death of Pinky, a Kansas cat who died at the age of 23. But the all-time record is still held by the incrediby durable Creme Puff of Texas, who lived just over 38 years.
