The Santa Bear Appeal is the Central Remedial Clinic's biggest annual fundraising drive. The organisation asks people to "buy a bear and show you care" every December, organising businesses and individuals to organise raffles and sell charitable 'bear' products to help support the clinic's services for children and adults with physical disabilities.
However, this December the CRC has been in the public eye for very different reasons. It has been revealed that senior staff at the CRC have been receiving extra 'top up' payments on top of their publicly funded salary. Some of these extra payments are said to have come from the organisation's fundraising arm. The HSE and Public Accounts Committee are among the groups investigating the issue in both the CRC and the wider health sector.
Some groups and commentators are urging the public to not let recent revelations affect their charitable donations, which remain vitally important for many organisations: including those at the centre of the payment controversies.
Would the 'top-up' payments affect your willingness to participate in the Santa Bear Appeal? Is it important for the public to actively support the CRC's work, despite the controversy? Does it impact on your view of charitable donations more generally? Vote in our poll and leave your comments below.
