Every day we witness things on our roads that border on the ridiculous. The other night for example, I went out to the Ireland/Poland game and opted to get a taxi home. The guy in the car behind us was riding too close and he crashed into the back of the taxi. These things happen, but it’s the simple things that some people can’t seem to grasp.
Today I’m not going to talk about tailgating, although I’m sure I’ll get to that soon enough. I’m talking about yellow boxes. I’m also asking what habits are most likely to raise your blood pressure on our roads.
I’m no saint, but my driver’s licence is what gets me paid, therefore I try my best to stick to the rules. Every day I come across numerous yellow boxes and I can’t remember a day when I haven’t seen some impatient driver park themselves in one. It drives me bananas. Sometimes it happens by mistake, like if you’re driving behind a truck or a van and you can’t see what’s going on in front. This is all the more reason that people should hold back, and have more patience.
Some people would plead ignorance and pretend they didn’t see the yellow box, or that they didn’t understand that they couldn’t wait there. These people need to do one or all of three things; get their eyes tested; learn the rules of the road; or stop lying. It’s a simple rule that allows access to other drivers.
To clarify, here’s how to use the yellow box according to rulesoftheroad.ie;
The first rule of yellow box club is:
1. You must not enter the yellow box junction unless you can clear it without stopping.
2. An exception is when you want to turn right. In this case, you may enter the yellow box junction while waiting for a gap in traffic coming from the opposite direction. However, don’t enter the box if to do so would block other traffic that has the right of way.
3. Yellow box junctions can also be found at railway level crossings or tramway crossings. Never enter these yellow box junctions unless you can leave them without stopping. Section 6 has more information on traffic signs and road markings.
In today’s poll, I’m hoping to find out what makes you mad on our roads? Personally my biggest bug bears are yellow boxes, people who don’t know how to merge, and drivers who think that it’s okay to park in handicap and family spaces.
The poll below asks for you to choose your top three annoyances. If what annoys you isn't here, please leave a comment, we want to know.
