In Puerto Rico, the US commonwealth in the northeastern Caribbean, lawmakers are set to debate a proposal to fine parents of children who are obese as a way of tackling the island's obesity epidemic.

If the bill is passed, parents will be fined $800 (€700) if their obese children fail to shed pounds, in an effort to improve the well-being of Puerto Rican children, and to encourage healthy eating.

But is this really a solution to the problem, or just the state trying to influence ever more control over its citizens.
