A think tank meets today at the Mansion House in Dublin to discuss Ireland's drugs policy and new approaches the country can take to battling drug addiction in more modern, effective ways.

Minister for State with responsibility for Drugs Strategy Áodhán Ó'Ríordán has organised the meeting and spoke to Newstalk Breakfast earlier today, saying the overall aim of any new strategy must be to change the way we treat addicts and users, “look at the needs of the vulnerable drug user ... and to take that person out of the criminal sphere," and to focus garda resources more on the pushers than the users of drugs.

One of the potential initiatives up for discussion is the use of supervised injection sites. Many countries, such across Germany, Spain and Australia, have already adopted the use of the centres, allowing addicts to inject in a clean environment, rather than on the streets, and under the supervision of nurses or supervisors. There are clear benefits for users

There are reports of benefits to the use of the centres. There are decreased overdoses, less public drug consumption and littering and an easier route for healthcare experts to reach addicts and decreased healthcare costs as the need for ambulances and medical treatment related to the use of intravenous drugs.

But there are still concerns, with some arguing that such a system would in a way legitimise drug use - not to mention the debate over where to locate the centres and how to police the areas around them.

In our poll today, more than 88% of those who voted said they would welcome the move.

You can still have your say via the poll below:

Would you welcome the introduction of supervised injection centres in Ireland?
