The news that just 46% of households have paid their Irish Water bill so far has delighted those in opposition to the charge, while putting the utility and the government on the defensive -  insisting they’re “extremely satisfied” with how the payment levels are running at this stage.

The news has certainly evoked a reaction in the public, with Newstalk listeners texting in to Breakfast and The Pat Kenny Show in big numbers this morning – with some who have paid feeling aggrieved that others didn't, and others who refused feeling emboldened that so many refuse to pay the bill.

The Government and Irish Water insist all remains on track and it’s business as usual from here on, but the opposition to the charges are adamant that this is an endorsement of a huge public opposition to the utility.

Environment Minster Alan Kelly told Newstalk this morning that one way or another, “everyone will pay” their bill.

Earlier today we asked if you plan on paying your next Irish Water bill - and the results were pretty definitive.

As of 10pm tonight, more than 91% of the people who responded to our poll say they do not intend to pay.

Our poll is still open below if you'd like to have your say.
