A new plaque is to be unveiled in Washington DC to celebrate the centenary of the 1916 Proclamation.

The commemorative plaque from Ireland will also honour the creator of the Irish Tricolour, Thomas F Meagher.

The announcement was made following months of consultation between the US National Park Service and Senator Mark Daly, senate spokesperson for the Irish Overseas and Diaspora.

The plaque will be located among the 193 commemorative stones donated to honour George Washington, located on the monument's interior walls.

Senator Daly commented: "This being such a significant year for Ireland with the celebration of the centenary of the 1916 Rising and also the 100th anniversary of the US National Park Service, this is an appropriate to way to honour the relationship between Ireland and the United States".

"The monument itself named after President George Washington, 40% of his army during the American War of Independence was made Irish or those with Heritage".

The plaque is due to be presented to the National Park Service this coming May by Senator Daly, and will include passages from the 1916 Proclamation.

Also to be included on the plaque will be a mention of Thomas F Meagher - creator of the Ireland's national flag, US Army Brigadier-General in the 69th Regiment of the Union in the American Civil War and Governor of Montana.
