A health and safety investigation has opened in the Australian city of Perth, after two Northern Irish workers were killed in an accident.

24-year-old Joe McDermott, who was from Co Tyrone, had recently moved to the country - while Gerry Bradley came from Co Derry.

Mr Bradley was due to fly home for Christmas next week.

It is thought they were trapped under a concrete slab as it was lifted off a lorry at a building site.

The Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has expressed his condolences to the men's families.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to the families, loved ones and colleagues of the two men involved in this tragic accident," construction company Jaxon said in a statement.

This man was there when it happened.

Sinn Féin councillor Sorcha McAnespy said Mr McDermott was loving the new adventure.

While Declan Kelly is the manager of the Portstewart Arms, where Mr Bradley worked before moving down under.
