The Master of the National Maternity Hospital has stated that it is up to the people of Ireland what kind of pressure they want to put on politicians in connection with the fatal foetal abnormalities bill.

Rhona Mahony told Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime that it wasn't for her to comment personally on how she feels about the bill but as an obstetrician, Article 43.3 created some complications when it dealt with medical issues.

"I think there's no doubt that Article 43.3 gives us some complications when we're dealing with medical issues.

"In Medicine, we're left dealing with the balance of risk than with medical complication."

Ms Mahony was speaking to Jonathan about the National Maternity Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which was opened by Health Minister Leo Varadkar today

The unit will cater for some of the most sick babies from across the State, and cost six million euro.
