The Donegal Association in Dublin has named the 'People of Creeslough' the ‘Donegal Person of the Year’.

This is the first year that the award has been given to a group of people.

At a ceremony in the Bonnington Hotel, the Donegal Association in Dublin gave the award to the people of Creeslough following their response to an accidental explosion on October 7th.

Ten people from ages 5 to 59 were killed by the explosion at an Applegreen service station, likely caused by an accidental gas leak, in the Donegal town.

Chairperson Kevin McFadden said the "strength, courage and kindness" shown by the people of Creeslough following the tragedy inspired thousands to vote for them this year.

"'The People of Creeslough’ is a catch all - it’s for everyone affected in every way, and there were many people there affected there in many ways,” he said.

“It's our way of showing the people of Creeslough the immense pride that everyone from Donegal felt, witnessing their strength, courage and kindness in the weeks that followed.”

Following the explosion, a support fund was set up by the Irish Red Cross for the Creeslough community, reaching more than €1 million.

A "Together for Creeslough" concert to thank first responders was held on January 30th in Letterkenny, hosted by Moya Brennan and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh

The Donegal Association in Dublin was founded following the Arranmore Disaster on November 9th, 1935, which saw 19 islanders die at sea on a journey home from Burtonport.

Previous ‘Donegal Person of the Year’ winners include singer Daniel O'Donnell and footballer Packie Bonner.
