A teenager has died in hospital following a crash in Mayo.

The 18-year-old woman was walking on the Castlebar to Claremorris Road - the N60 - at about 5 o'clock yesterday evening when she was hit by a car.

The 83-year-old driver and a young male passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution, but are not believed to have been injured.

The injured teenager was taken to Mayo General Hospital, but was pronounced dead late last night.

The road was closed for an examination but has since since reopened.
