The roles are in addition to 1,000 positions announced by the company in 2012, and will bring the total workforce in the North Eastern town to 1,850.

The Taoiseach, along with Minister for jobs and enterprise Richard Bruton made the announcement at an IDA event in Dublin this morning.

Louise Phelan is Vice-President of Global Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa for PayPal. She talked about the company's policy of taking on unemployed people.

In a statement released to media, she said "We have been delighted to be able to make a very positive impact on the lives of so many people in the area (Dundalk), both through our community activities and by virtue of the jobs we create, which have taken so many unemployed people off the local live register. In addition, we know that almost 1,000 indirect ‘spin-off’ jobs in other local businesses will be created as a result of PayPal’s investment in Dundalk".

The 400 jobs announced today will be filled by 2018, bringing PayPal’s total Irish workforce to 2,900.

Through its offices in Dublin and Dundalk, the online and mobile payments processor manage 60 million active accounts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Government welcome

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny said"This PayPal announcement further enhances Ireland's reputation as a prime location for global businesses and is a tribute to our talented and flexible workforce".

The Jobs Minister Richard Bruton added "Louise Phelan and PayPal Ireland are a standout example of a phenomenon we are seeing more and more of in recent years, an Irish operation within a multinational, under strong leadership, becoming more strategically important within global operations and winning new investment and jobs for Ireland".
