The Anti-Austerity Alliance candidate Paul Murphy has been elected in the Dublin South West by-election.

Meanwhile another upset is on the cards in Roscommon South Leitrim where Independent Michael Fitzmaurice is predicted to win the seat there.

The result in Dublin South West was not how most had scripted it for weeks.

Sinn Féin's Cathal King was the favourite, and topped the poll on the first count.

But close behind was the former Socialist party MEP, Paul Murphy, who contested under the Anti-Austerity Alliance banner.

Count by count he gained ground, picking up transfers from many quarters. He finally won the seat by 566 votes.

Across the country in Roscommon South Leitrim the voters did what no-one had predicted.

Yes Fianna Fáil's Ivan Connaughton topped the poll - but his lead over Independent Michael Fitzmaurice has been eaten into in three subsequent counts.

There's now just 771 between them and the Galway man backed by Luke Ming Flanagan is now on course to become the country's newest TD.
