Details of a pandemic bonus for frontline workers will not be revealed on Budget Day, the Taoiseach has confirmed.

Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Micheál Martin said the plan was still being worked on – and insisted it is ‘not a Budget Day issue.’

The Government is considering whether a tax-free voucher of up to €500 may be part of any reward package.

An extra bank holiday is likely to be included to recognise the efforts of frontline staff over the last 18 months.

The Taoiseach said the exact details have yet to be agreed.

“The issue in terms of recognition for those particularly on the frontline within the healthcare services but generally people who worked is one that is still gaining consideration.

“It is very challenging and we will consult with the social partners in this regard as well in terms of arriving at a situation that will, I think, be fair and that will give due recognition to what has been an extraordinary effort all round.”
