The payments are on top of their Dáil salaries of more than €87,000 a year.

The TD with the highest expenses claim is Fianna Fail's Michael Moynihan of Cork South West, who has received more than €232,000.

His claim is due to the distance of his base from the Dail and an additional allowance for assistant whip duties.

Fine Gael's Pat Breen of Clare received over €227,000, as did Cork South Central deputy Ciaran Lynch.

Fine Gael's Joe Carey from Clare and his party colleague deputy Frank Feighan received more than €222,000 since March 2011.

The Irish Independent reports that just one in ten have to provide receipts for their expenses.

Only one TD, Eamonn Maloney of Labour, does not claim expenses, even though they are optional.
