Cillian Murphy has been nominated for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars.

The Irishman was nominated for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic 'Oppenheimer'.

He will go up against Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright for the coveted prize.

Should he win, Murphy will become the first Irish-born person to claim the coveted prize.

Nolan has previously been nominated for Inception, Memento and Dunkirk in the past, but he has yet to take home a Best Director award at the Oscars.

In the end, there was disappointment for Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Paul Mescal (All of Us Strangers) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) who were not nominated for this year’s awards.

Irish co-production ‘Poor Things’ received 11 nominations – including Best Picture, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo.

The film was also nominated in the Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design and Best Hair and Make-up categories.

It is the highest number of Academy Award Nominations ever received by an Irish produced film.

The film was produced and developed by Irish production company Element Pictures and has already won two Golden globes and been nominated for 11 BAFTAs.

“We are thrilled with the news today and with the ongoing success of Poor Things,” said Element Pictures founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.

“This is a phenomenal achievement for Yorgos, Emma and our incredible cast and crew of the film, including of course Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan.

“It’s also a huge tribute to all of the Element Pictures team in Dublin, Belfast and London who have been across every detail of this production from its inception to its worldwide release.”

Oppenheimer leads the way with 13 nominations for this year’s awards with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie taking home eight.

The two polar opposite films sparked the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon when they were both released on the same day in July last year, with many viewers watching them back-to-back.

While both were huge hits, it was Barbie that won the box office battle, going on to bring in more than $1bn (€920m).

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated in 10 categories, with Bradley Copper’s Maestro nominated in seven.
