Pope Francis will beatify the murdered Archbishop Oscar Romero today.
The Latin American cleric is to be declared blessed - a step towards sainthood in a ceremony later.
Romero spoke out against poverty, torture, murder and other atrocities committed by El Salvador's US-backed government and was assassinated by a right-wing death squad while offering mass in 1980.
Archbishop Romero had strong links to Ireland - he worked closed with Irish missionaries.
When his diocesan radio station in El Salvador was destroyed in a bomb attack Irish parishioners donated thousands of pounds to get it back on air.
