A host of Irish athletes are gearing up for the first competitive events at the London Olympics.

Cycling, swimming and gymnastics are just a few of the sports on the schedule today.

Last night’s three and a half hour opening ceremony has won rave reviews from most people.

Danny Boyle’s show featured a meadow, fields of grass, the River Thames – a tribute to the Industrial Revolution – and an explosion of music.

Meanwhile, a betting scandal has rocked the Irish squad on day one of the Olympics.

According to this morning’s Irish Independent, a full investigation is underway at Team Ireland, after an allegation that an unnamed Irish competitor made two bets backing an opponent to win an event that they were competing in.

Both bets are reported to have been successful and the competitor has won €3,600.

Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey has confirmed that a full investigation is now underway and that anyone found guilty could be kicked out of the Olympics.

However it’s understood that’s unlikely to happen because of the tight timeframe involved.
