The UN says there are now more than 42-million displaced people around the world.

That's the highest since 1994 and the crisis in Syria has contributed hugely to that figure.

The annual global trends report from the UNHCR has identified 15 million refugees, nearly 1-million asylum seekers, and almost 30-million people who were forced to flee within the borders of their own countries.

War still remains the dominant cause of displacement.

Schools under fire

A recent report from Human Rights Watch accused Syrian forces of shelling schools and interrogating students.

'Safe No More' says students have been beaten for alleged anti-government activity and classrooms have been turned into military bases, detention centres and sniper posts by both Syrian armed forces and opposition fighters.

Footage released by the group appears to show terrified students in Dael caught up in a shelling raid.
