The number of complaints made about taxi drivers to the National Transport Authority doubled last year and is continuing to rise.
Figures obtained by the Irish Independent show that there were 742 complaints were made in 2013, twice as many received in 2012.
For the most part complaints received related to driver conduct or fares while any of the more serious issues were referred to Gardai.
However some of the complaints related to behaviour and hygiene. One passenger who hired a mobility taxi was not allowed his guide dog in the car after being asked if it was "too big and too hairy".
The condition of the taxi reared its a head a number of times with many people saying they were overwhelmed by the stench of a driver's clothing and body odour 30 seconds after getting in.
Meanwhile on-street detections are also being carried out informed by patterns of complaint behaviour.
