The Twitter account of US political magazine Newsweek was today defaced by images and tweets which purport to come from Islamic State hackers.
The cover image was changed to a masked figure by an IS logo, with the caption "Je suIS IS," a parody of the "Je suis Charlie" slogan which became popular after the Charlie Hebdo massacre last month.
The group responsible identified themselves as the "Cyber Caliphate," and tweeted pictures of what they claim were secret documents relating to US online surveillance, as well as another which read:
"#CyberCaliphate Bloody Valentine's Day #MichelleObama! We're watching you, you girls and your husband!"
Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Emily Scheer, PR Director for Newsweek's owners IBT Media, confirmed the incident:
“We can confirm that Newsweek’s Twitter account was hacked this morning, and have since regained control of the account. We apologize to our readers for anything offensive that might have been sent from our account during that period, and are working to strengthen our newsroom security measures going forward.”
