Eye witnesses claim a train that derailed in New York yesterday, killing four people, was travelling faster than normal.

More than 60 others were hurt in the crash in the Bronx area of in New York. 11 of them are critically ill.

The seven-carriage passenger train was travelling from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central derailed at 7.20am on Sunday

Three of the four people killed in the accident were found outside the train, which left the track 100 yards north of a station in the Bronx.

At least one carriage stopped at the edge of the Hudson River and rescue workers were forced to cut survivors from the wreckage.

The Fire Department of New York said 135 firefighters were at the scene.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) said five of the carriages on the diesel train had derailed on a curved section of track, but none entered the adjacent Hudson or Harlem rivers.

NTSB team meets with New York local and state officials

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an investigation into the derailment. It gave this latest update on the incident.
