The new governor of the Central Bank has been named as Professor Philip Lane.

The Trinity College professor will take over from his former university colleague Patrick Honohan later this year.

Professor Lane's appointment was recommended by the Cabinet this morning after what was described as "an extensive national and international executive search process" involving over 100 candidates.

Philip Lane is the Whately Chair of Political Economy at Trinity College Dublin.
