Newstalk decided to test out the new €20 note on some machines around Dublin city this morning and the results were positive.
We first went to a Luas ticket machine which accepted the note straight away, topping up our user’s Leap card in the process.
Next, was the supermarket test. We went to an express check out at Dunnes Stores to purchase a litre of milk but the €20 note was rejected.
However, the cashier monitoring the express checkouts approached the user to assist and called a technician who was in the process of installing the checkouts at that time.
He offered to exchange the €20 note for a valid note to pay for the item which was declined. He mentioned updates were being conducted at head office as well as in store.
Newstalk have contacted Dunnes Stores to verify this and are awaiting a response.
Our third and final test was at a city Dart station. Again, we successfully topped up another Leap card without encountering any cash rejection - a good day for the new €20 note!
After the new €5 note was introduced on the 2nd May 2013, problems were experienced at Iarnród Éireann and Luas ticket machines as well as some supermarket express checkout machines.
However, before the launch of the new €10 note on the 23rd September 2014, some testing had been carried out and no issues were encountered.
