Senior garda to liaise with NAMA over concerns - Taoiseach

The Taoiseach says a senior garda has been appointed to liase with NAMA about investigations into alleged impropriety at the agency.

Enda Kenny's announcement comes as Fianna Fáil Senator Daragh O'Brien goes to gardaí with documents he is in possession of that he claims will rock NAMA to its very core.

Mr Kenny confirmed to the Dáil that a garda investigation was launched earlier this year regarding the conduct of a former staff member, while a complaint was made by a firm of solicitors in August. However, the force is awaiting further information and documentation.

Earlier, a senior Government Minister says it would be appropriate for the Oireachtas Finance Committee to call in officials from NAMA. The Taoiseach told the Dáil NAMA officials were willing to assist the committee, within the restrictions of any garda investigation.

The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar says the committee could ask them the 'hard questions', in relation to allegations that two former employees leaked sensitive information.

Speaking to Newstalk's Breakfast, Minister Varadkar denied any complacency on the government's part:

Irish Times Finance Correspondent Ciarán Hancock told Newstalk's Breakfast NAMA rejects criticism of its secretive policies, claiming reasons of confidentiality and commerciality prevent them from revealing details about its debtors the media has long requested.
