Fuel prices are on the rise again after a very brief dip at the petrol point. We have a quick look at some ways that you can save on the fuel front. Some of these may seem foolish, but if it can save you a few bob it might be worth it!

Your speed

Different cars reach optimal fuel economy at different ranges of speed. The amount of fuel being used usually increases at speeds above 80-100km/h. By observing the speed limit it is safer and it’s said that driving at these speeds can have a fuel saving of between 7% and 23%.

Weight

As a parent I know that it can be difficult to keep the boot empty and free of clutter. Apparently an extra 100 pounds within your vehicle can increase your fuel consumption by up to 2%. This increase is based on the weight of the extra items relative to the cars weight and it affects smaller vehicles more than bigger ones. So if you don’t plan on playing golf, leave the clubs at home!

Cruise Control

Many cars come with cruise control. When on the motorway, using this helps your car to maintain a constant speed - this can save on fuel.

Fixing

If your car seems out of tune, or if you’ve recently failed an emissions test, get it fixed and it should improve fuel economy. If your car has a faulty oxygen sensor getting it fixed can improve the efficiency of your motor massively. Check your air filters regularly for dirt and make sure your spark plugs are in good nick.

Tyres

By making sure your tyres are inflated correctly you can improve your fuel economy by up to 3.3%. Under-inflated tyres can lower economy 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Keeping your tyres properly inflated also means they will last longer. If you’re unsure as to what your tyre pressure should be, there is usually a sticker in the driver’s door or you can check your owner’s manual.

Oil

By using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of oil your car should bring your fuel tank further. For example; don’t use 10W-30 motor oils if your manual says use 5W-30 – apparently this can lower your fuel economy by up to 2%. If you’re unsure as to what grade of oil you should use, check your manual.

Combine Errands

This is a very obvious one but if you plan all combine all errands where you would use your car you will save on fuel. This takes planning, but it will save time in the long run. If you don’t combine small jobs and you make several short trips the disadvantage is that starting a cold engine uses much more fuel.

Parking

In my experience people love parking close to the shops when in a shopping centre. This is why these spots are always taken first. Why not give up on parking closer to the shops, park half way or nearer to the back – by doing this you won’t be sitting around frustrated waiting for somebody to leave their space at the front. If you park near the back it means you’ll get out quicker, and sure the extra little walk will do you no harm!
