The mother of a man stabbed to death during a fight in Kilkee, County Clare has told his killer her heart froze when she saw her son covered in blood.

Robbie Walsh of Island View, Kilrush, County Clare will be sentenced next month for the manslaughter of Karl Haugh in August 2017.

Robbie Walsh wasn't the one who brought a knife to a fight at a housing estate in Kilkee in the early hours of August 6th 2017.

He claimed his cousin was attacked by Karl Haugh earlier that night after calling to his house to buy drugs.

The then 21-year-old told Gardaí he and his cousins later went back to the estate for a fight but that he had no intention of killing anyone.

He said he picked up a knife while grappling with Mr Haugh and stabbed him once in the back.

He was convicted of manslaughter last month and a victim impact statement was read out on behalf of Mr Haugh’s mother at today’s sentence hearing.

The court heard she has now lost both her children in tragic circumstances. Her daughter died in a car crash that almost claimed Karl’s life when he was 11-years-old.

She said her home is so silent now with nobody to cook for and nobody to throw their arms around her and say “I love you Mum.”

Walsh will be sentenced next month.
