Teachers are refusing to engage with the new Leaving Cert calculated grades system until they are offered stronger legal protections by the State.

The ASTI is calling a for a stronger indemnity against legal action for teachers taking part in the process.

It said the current indemnity protects schools and principals – but could see teachers left to pay their own legal costs if a student decided to sue over their grades.

The union said it will continue to engage with the Government but is advising its members not to take part in the process until stronger protections are in place.

The lifting of some COVID-19 restrictions for children will be considered by the country's top public health doctors this morning.

The National Public Health Emergency Team's examining how to reduce the burden of the measures on those under 18, given the low rate of transmission in that age group.

The team will also discuss changing the rules around testing, and how COVID-19 is spreading in meat plants and nursing homes.

A further 12 people with the virus have died, bringing the death toll to 1,583, while 76 more cases have been confirmed.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating after a shot was fired by Garda gun during in an incident in Cork.

It happened on Mitchelstown Road in Mallow at around eight thirty last night.

Two men were also arrested and are being held at Mallow Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act.

Gardaí say they are investigating the circumstances in which the Garda weapon was fired.

Two men have been arrested after the seizure of €237,000 worth of drugs in County Cork.

A house was searched in the city yesterday morning, with €70,000 worth of heroin found.

A man in his 40s was taken into custody following the discovery and taken to Mayfield Garda Station.

In a second search at an industrial estate €167,000 worth of heroin, Xanax tablets, ecstasy and cocaine were discovered.

A man in his 30s was arrested and brought to Togher Garda Station.
