The Government is expected to announce an extension of the restrictions on work and travel today.

The restrictions were due to come to an end on Sunday but the National Public Health Emergency Team is expected to recommend an extension.

263 people in the Republic have now died after contracting COVID-19 in Ireland, while the number of confirmed cases has risen to 6,574.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said the restrictions will be changed “when the time is right and not before.”

European Union finance ministers have agreed a €500bn rescue package for economies affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

It was agreed after opposition from Germany and the Netherlands saw a marathon negotiation end in failure earlier this week.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said the supports will be available to “governments, employers and citizens.”

He acknowledged it took a “few hours to agree, but only because this really matters”

Gardaí are investigating the discovery of partial skeletal remains at a housing estate in Dublin.

The remains were uncovered at the Lissenfield housing estate in Rathmines yesterday evening.

It is believed they may have been there for some time and a forensic anthropologist has been called in.

The scene has been sealed off and Gardaí are carrying out a technical examination of the site.

Messages of thanks to the heroes of the COVID-19 crisis will be projected across the Mater Hospital in Dublin from tonight.

The #DearHeroes campaign offers people a chance to say thank you to frontline workers for all their efforts over the past few weeks.

People can submit their personalised messages online and see them projected loud and proud across the front of the hospital over the next four nights.

The display will also be streamed online and across social media.
