The second person charged over the gangland murder of Gareth Hutch will appear in court this morning.

The 29-year-old man was arrested last week and charged last night with weapons offences.

Yesterday, the first person to be charged in connection with the killing was remanded in custody.

Mary McDonnell, who lives in the same flat complex where the shooting took place, is accused of withholding information from gardaí.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has been urged to introduce compulsory public inquests into the deaths of women during pregnancy and childbirth.

It follows confirmation of the death of a woman during emergency surgery at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin's Holles Street last month.

The 34-year-old woman reportedly died during an operation to deal with an ectopic pregnancy.

A UK coroner will today decide whether to open a full inquest into the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings.

Explosions in two pubs in the city killed 21 people and injured 182 people. 

Six men, the so-called Birmingham Six, spent 17 years in jail for the attacks before their convictions were quashed.

A senior Fine Gael minister has said Michael D Higgins would have "broad cross-party support" if he wanted a second term as President.

But Leo Varadkar insisted it was too early to say whether another candidate might emerge to seek the role.

President Higgins previously said he would only serve one term, but has more recently refused to say whether he would seek another seven years.

In the US, an animal protection watchdog wants Cincinnati Zoo to be sued for the death of a gorilla.

17-year-old gorilla Harambe was killed on Saturday after a four-year-old boy fell into the enclosure.

Police in the city are considering criminal charges against the family.
