Four police officers have been killed and seven are injured after being shot at a Black Lives Matter rally in the US city of Dallas.

They were targeted by snipers.

Two officers are in surgery and three are in a critical condition in hospital, he added.

Officers say that a suspect has been taken into custody - while another person of interest has handed himself in.

Police say two occupants of a car are being questioned and negotiations are ongoing with a suspect who has told them there are bombs "all over downtown Dallas".

At least 35 people have been killed and 60 injured in an attack on a Shia mausoleum north of Baghdad, security sources say.

The attack has been claimed by Islamic State.

The attack began with rocket fire on Thursday night before a suicide bomber targeted police officers who were guarding the entrance to the Sayyid Mohammed shrine in Balad, about 93 kilometres from the Iraqi capital.

Meetings are continuing to find an alternative provider to look after clients treated by the suicide charity, Console.

There are growing indications that Console is to be wound down after details of a HSE audit emerged last month which revealed financial irregularities between 2012 and 2014.

Its services - which include counseling and a helpline - are expected to be transferred to other support organisations.

The Children's Minister has announced a fund of €6.5 million for pre-schools who need to expand their premises so they can accommodate extra youngsters.

From this September 60,000 extra children will be able to avail of free childcare under a special government scheme.

Children will now benefit from an average of 61 weeks, up from the previous 38 weeks.
