At least four people have been killed and two are in a critical condition after a school shooting in Canada.

A suspect, understood to be a former student, has been arrested.

It's the worst school shooting in the country in 25 years, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying it was "every parent's worst nightmare".

At least six people have died in a massive snowstorm that's hit the eastern United States.

Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and New Jersey have already declared a state of emergency.

Thousands of flights to the eastern US have been cancelled.

This morning's scheduled services from Dublin by United Airlines to Newark, American Airlines to Philadelphia, Aer Lingus to New York and Delta's flight also to New York are affected.

A national day of protests against water charges and austerity will take place this afternoon.

The protests are part of a sustained campaign planned for the weeks coming up to the General Election - and will include another demonstration on the last Saturday before the Election.

The rallies, organised by the Right2Water Campaign, will be held in over 30 locations nationwide.

The Finance Minister says Fine Gael will work to ensure that both itself and Labour get enough seats to stay in Government.

Michael Noonan is the most senior minister to hint that the Coalition parties could work together to maximise their seats in the next Dáil.

The comments came as Fine Gael members gathered in Dublin for their annual Ard Fheis, which concludes tonight.

Gardaí investigating the murder of Kenneth O'Brien have renewed their appeal for information.

This day last week the dismembered body of Mr O'Brien was discovered in a suitcase in the Grand Canal.

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for anyone who was in Ardclough on Friday and early Saturday last to contact them.

They also want to speak to anyone who may have seen or had any contact with Kenneth last Friday morning, or can help in tracing his movements.
