The Immigrant Council of Ireland has said the discovery of 16 people in a truck container on its way to Wexford from France highlights the desperation of those forced to flee their homelands.

Gardaí said the men are in good health after spending up to 12 hours in the truck container before being discovered by a ferry worker.

The ferry was met by Gardaí and immigration officials at Rosslare and the men were transferred to a Dublin reception centre, where they spent the night.

ICI spokesperson Pippa Woolnough said she was very glad to hear the Government say that it was taking a humanitarian approach to the incident.

A man has been found guilty of murdering 22-year-old backpacker Grace Millane in New Zealand last year.

The Essex woman’s body was found buried in a suitcase near Auckland after she was reported missing in December.

She was strangled by a man she met on a dating site.

A jury this morning unanimously found a 27-year-old New Zealand man guilty of her murder. He will be sentenced in February.

Three men have been charged by Gardaí investigating a number of threats to kill and cause serious harm on social media.

One man in his 40s and two in their 20s are due before Mullingar District Court this morning at 10:30am.

It comes after a 13-year-old girl was seriously injured in an attack at her home in County Fermanagh last weekend.

She suffered stab wounds after a group of men armed with machetes entered the house at Trasna Way in Lisnaskea on Saturday night.

A new report from Women's Aid has revealed that 230 women have been killed since 1996. 16 children have died alongside their mothers in that time.
